TALES FROM TIM WALKER
Some of my favorite photographs were taken by Tim Walker. He’s best known for his fashion stories that are big on whimsy and fantasy. Tim was inspired to attend photography school after working for a year in Cecil Beaton’s archive. He shot his first story for British Vogue at the age of 25. Recently, Tim has been sharing the back stories of his photography on his IG account, which is what I’m inspired to tell you about. You will read charming anecdotes and revealing details, which make his work all the more engaging. He tells of the time he photographed Margaret Atwood and how his preconceived notion about her was all wrong. There is a series of posts about a shoot with Madonna requested by Anna Wintour in 2005, where he explains why he was the wrong choice for the project. I find it all fascinating. The same day I was writing this, an article about Tim’s Victorian lock-keeper’s cottage in Hackney was published. If you look closely, you will see some of the props that feature in his shots.
HER LITERARY TRAVEL
Her Literary Travel is a project created by Hayley Solano to help women take the literary pilgrimages they’ve always dreamed of, organizing trips tied to classic novels and the places where those stories live. Upcoming tours include Literary Gardens of England, which explores gardens connected to writers like Jane Austen and Frances Hodgson Burnett, as well as a return to Prince Edward Island centered on Anne of Green Gables. There are also two Little Women tours, added after the first sold out in 24 hours, featuring a picnic lunch at Walden Pond. I’m not sure if these trips are for me now or further down the road, but an Agatha Christie–focused itinerary would help me decide for sure.
