THE RIVER SOLSTICE FESTIVAL
A new one-day public arts gathering is coming to the LA River on the summer solstice (June 21). The River Solstice Festival brings together musicians, visual artists, workshops, food vendors, and community organizations for a free afternoon at Lewis MacAdams Riverfront Park. The lineup includes harpist Mary Lattimore, artists from Bob Baker Marionette Theater, and a wide range of visual artists responding to the river and its surrounding landscape. The event is organized by Living Earth, whose work often sits at the intersection of culture, nature, and community. The longest day of the year does deserve a proper celebration! You can RSVP for this free event here (join the waitlist if they say the event is full, as more spots will open up).
THE SCENTED HERBARIUM
If you have ever wandered into an Officine Universelle Buly boutique, you know that shopping for a lip balm can turn into a lesson on French history, botanical illustration, cabinetmaking, and perfume. Their upcoming release, The Scented Herbarium, continues that tradition. Part book, part olfactory object, it explores the twelve botanical ingredients featured in Buly's Les Jardins Français collection, pairing illustrations and stories with the scents of the flowers and plants themselves. I also learned that the counters in Buly's Galeries Lafayette boutique are carved with herbarium motifs (truly beautiful). Now that I know a scented herbarium exists, I would quite like one!
